Checklist for profiling a suitable grant agency



- Which academic degree do I need to apply?
- Does the foundation support external proposals of any topic or does it maintain only own topics?
- Does the foundation operate on a national, regional or international scale? Is it open for international applicants?
- Is it a state, parastatal or private organization?
- Which programs or calls for proposals are run?
- What is the target group/ are the target groups? (Age, sex, qualification, nationality, confessian, ethnic minority etc.)
- Which scientific, political, religious and/or social objectives does the donor have?
- Thematic orientation, subject-specific orientation
- Granting quotas (if known)
- Suitability for beginners, or advanced/senior scholars/researchers
- Rules in regard to form (structure!) and content of the proposal
- Phases of the reviewing process; Would you have to travel for an oral examination/defense of your proposal? Or does the application run through a reviewing process without your participation?
- Which project durations are supported by the donor?
- What are the deadlines for the submission of the proposal?
- Does the donor have financial limitations? Can the grant cover the estimated project expenditures?
- Does the donor only support certain aspects of a project budget (e.g. cost for field research)?
